Overview[]
Rain debuted with the release of Paramount Pictures' Star Trek: Insurrection. Rain inaugurated Dolby's "organic" trailer theme-real visuals with real music. Less than ten percent of the visual elements were created on a computer, and the majority of water images were taken from real photography. A special water machine was developed so strobe lights could capture actual raindrops colliding mid-air. A high-speed camera, capable of recording 200 feet of film in three seconds, was used to record this phenomenon not visible to the naked eye.
To complement the organic visuals, the music was recorded in Dolby's own presentation studio (designed with adjustable acoustics), and performed by members of the San Francisco Ballet, Opera, and Symphony.
In addition, Rain introduced Dolby's symphonic soundmark.
Description[]
We start with bronze-ish colored water which appear to reflect the Dolby logo; then we flash and see a splash of water with it drops hitting each other. It fades to rain falling toward the camera. We then see it hit water reflecting the Dolby Digital logo, then fade to the Dolby Digital logo, a CGI object, in water. We fade to a smoky bronze background with "www.dolby.com".
Trivia[]
- A short version exists starting with the appearance of the Dolby logo.
- U-571 is the only LaserDisc with this trailer.
- Rain is the first known Surround EX trailer and media released, predating the official launch of the format by many months. It was used as an early test for Surround EX setups prior to the arrival of compatible films.
- A later standard Dolby Digital version was also created.
- No known US release outside of demo discs and Metal Gear Solid 4 contain this trailer, though this still needs to be investigated.
